The African Cancer STARS Program Welcomes its First Class of Trainees

On May 16, 2022 the first class of 23 African Cancer STARS participants began their training. 

The 9-month training consists of weekly videos and live discussions, with a core research training “PROMOTE” (PROject Management Oversight Training and Education) track in the first 2 months, followed by 7 months of live training and mentoring for the PI-STARS and PM-STARS tracks.

Trainees come from 10 African countries (Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda).  Research interests include early detection, prognostic, diagnostic, and mitochondrial biomarkers; biobanking, epidemiology, surgical oncology, immunology, and pharmacology. Cancer sites of focus for trainees include breast, cervical, and liver, and prostate cancers.
